Tokyo Gore Police - Face Rip

Oh boy, where do I begin? First off, not all Japanese films are like this and not all Japanese people like these kind of movies. This is the same country that gave us Akira Kurosawa, Yasujiro Ozu, and Kenji Mizoguchi; Japanese directors who have created some of the most critically acclaimed films off all time. Just like in America, there are different subgenres of horror that deliberately focus on graphic portrayals of gore and violence. We here in the States call it a 'splatter' or 'gore film'. Not everyone's cup of tea(though this film is actually received well by critics), but it's right up Greatest Movie Death's alley and today we give praise to the Japanese Gore genre with a scene from Tokyo Gore Police.

The film is set in a futuristic and chaotic Japan where a virus that mutates humans into monstrous creatures called "Engineers" has been released. The virus causes bizarre weapons to sprout from any injury. Our heroine Ruka is helping the police force in order to find her father's killer. In this clip we see Riku take out a bad guy with her newly equipped claw-hand.

This clip is actually pretty tame compared to other classic scenes from the movie, like gator girl, Penis Cannon, amputee ninja, and many more to come...

Goemon - Hong-man Choi Splits

Director Kazuaki Kiriya effortlessly oozes out an amazing visual style in his films. Kiriya who wrote, directed, and edited the live action sci-fi film Casshern, pushes the stylistic envelope with his newest film, Geomon. The movie tells the story of folk legend Goemon Ishikawa, a bandit hero who stole valuables from the rich and gave them to the poor. The movie is full of amazing action sequences and imagery that are heavily anime-esque, leaving you stuck in your seat. In this scene our hero Goemon takes on Gao, played by K-1 giant Choi Hong-man. After a couple close calls from Gao's ridiculously large sword, Geomon slides under his legs then proceeds to slice him up the middle, causing his body to slice in half in Takashi Miike fashion.

The Machine Girl - Ninja Fight

It really is an art, the it's-so-bad-it's-good genre that Japan seems to have mastered. Hollywood can learn a thing or two...or three, but they're too busy making films that are so-bad-it's-not-even-funny. In comes Kataude mashin gâru, aka The Machine Girl. The acting is terrible, the story is terrible, and the CGI is terrible but god damn if the film doesn't shit out entertainment like it has a bad case of the runs. This movie has it all: Ninjas, flying guillotines, drill bras, and buckets of blood, did I mention drill bras? In this scene, we see the ridiculously over-the-top action at work when our protagonists get ambushed by the Mighty Morphin Power Ninjas. One unlucky character gets sliced to pieces by ninja stars then proceeds to explode in a geyser of blood. The fun doesn't stop there though, keep watching as Ami proceeds to annihilate the ninjas with a high-powered machine gun attached to her nub. One of the ninjas gets shot up to the point where his screaming flesh torn skull is all that remains. This movie will go down in history as one of the greatest fucking films ever made, right along Citizen Kane and The Godfather II. The Machine Girl, did I mention the drill bra?

Fudoh: The New Generation - Vaginal Blow Dart Assassin

The only man who could come up with a movie death as bizarre as this one is the legend himself, Takashi Miike. Fudoh is one of Miike's earlier films that looks like a typical Yakuza story on the outside, but is filled with so many wonderfully weird over-the-top moments that it breaks through cliché and goes into epic. Riki Fudoh (Shosuke Tanihara) is the youngest son of a Yakuza boss who murders Riki's older brother to settle a dispute between rival gangs. Riki is repulsed by the ways of the mob—particularly his fathers, so he vows revenge with the help of some recruits. One of them is Mika (played by porn star Miho Nomoto), who sports a blow gun and freakish muscle control in her nether regions to create the ultimate stripper assassin. In this scene we see her at work, taking out a mob boss using her um.......special talents.

Akira - Death by Psychokinetic Powers

Overwhelmed by his newfound abilities and confronted by his captors, Tetsuo uses his powers to escape. With a single thought the Doctor and guard explode into pieces, as body matter splatters on the wall and ceiling. Classic! This film was way ahead of its time.

Throne of Blood - Washizu's Final Stand

In the spectacular ending of Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood, Washizu(Toshiro Mifune) gets his comeuppance. Shot by his own archers, he stumbles forward before being shot in the neck. He slowly descends the stairs and dies, collapsing dramatically on the fog-soaked ground. One of the most memorable and greatest deaths ever in the history of film.

  • The famous arrow scene near the end was in fact done with real arrows. That is, the arrows hitting the wooden planks were not done with special effects, but rather choreographed with archers. Mifune waves his arms to brush away the arrows sticking from the planks, indicating to them that he wanted to go in that particular direction. The real arrows were included to get Mifune's facial expressions of real-life fear, which is exceptionally hard to imitate. Of course, the arrows that hit the Mifune character were bamboo fakes.

Gozu - Death of a Yakuza Attack Dog

Scene from the 2003 Takashi Miike film Gozu. Ozaki(Sho Aikawa) takes care of a vicious Yakuza attack dog and begins his journey into the bizarre; full of breast milk, cow heads, and anal soup ladles. One of my personal favorite Miike films.

Men Behind the Sun - Unit 731

I usually don't warn people about these videos, with the title "Greatest Movie Deaths of All Time" I really don't think I have to. But this clip is an exception, it's just really fucked.

Men Behind the Sun is a graphic depiction of the war atrocities committed by the Japanese at Unit 731, the secret biological weapons experimentation unit of the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. The film details the various cruel medical experiments Unit 731 inflicted upon the Chinese and Soviet prisoners at the tail-end of the war.

0:00 - Bomb Test
1:00 - Decompression Chamber Test
2:50 - Freezing Test

This is the first movie rated "III" (equivalent to US Rating NC-17) in Hong Kong and you'll see why......don't say I didn't warn you.

Yakuza Demon - "You're way too cool man"

Yakuza Demon is a gritty classic crime drama with a different method of operation. It shows the honor, respect, and loyalty that some Yakuza pay the ultimate price for. In the final scene, Seiji (the always great Riki Takeuchi), finally without a gun and ready to start a new and different life is through with his past but the past isn't through with him. The Tendo syndicate closes in on him and open fire as Seiji blocks all the shots from hitting Boss Muto's wife. We realize just how badass Seiji really was with the last line of the film before the credits roll.

Shogun Assassin - Greatest last words ever

For those of you who have never seen Shogun Assassin, drive to the nearest MovieStop and buy it, right now. I don't care what you have to do, just buy it. It is the greatest and most violent Samurai movie not associated with Akira Kurosawa. Ogami Itto will go down as the biggest badass ever. The films are renowned for the incredible amount of onscreen stylized violence. In fact, after the second film, each movie would climax with Ogami slaughtering an entire army single-handedly. In the film White Heaven in Hell, Ogami Ittō kills a total of 150 people on screen, the highest body count for a single character in a single film in cinema history. In this scene, Ogami takes on the Masters of Death with bloody results and the greatest final words in film history.

The Street Fighter - Sonny Chiba X-RAY Head Smash

The Street Fighter was the first movie in the States to be granted an 'X' certificate, as some scenes were pretty shocking for 1974. In this scene after Terry and Ratface's car is dropped off the bridge, Terry(Chiba) gets his revenge by beating the holy crap out of two guys. After getting one of them on his knees, he jumps and punches him directly on top of the head- the scene cuts to an X-RAY VIEW of the dude's head getting bashed in! Then it cuts back to the actual shot of the guy, who spews a mouthful of that wonderfully fake-looking Japanese stage blood.

As Christian Slater said in "True Romance" when asked if Sonny Chiba was the good guy- "Well, he's not so much the good guy as he is just a bad motherfucker."

Evil Dead Trap - Watch Your Step

Shiryo no wana, better known as Evil Dead Trap in the US might look like a Japanese ripoff of Saw. You couldn't be more wrong, the movie came out in 1988, 16 years before Saw. The movie was so popular in Japan that it spawned two sequels. It starts out as an over the top slasher movie, but about halfway through the movie it goes beyond over the top into the realm of insane. You can't go wrong here; blood, gore, and did I mention that some of girls in the movie are Japanese porn stars. In this scene, a crossbow is attached by wire to a door handle. The door opens and an arrow shoots at poor Mako, who is tied up and gagged. It doesn't end there, watch the scene yourself to find out what happens.

Kill Bill vol. 1 - Decapitation!

As decapitation week continues I give you a scene from Kill Bill. O-Ren Ishii (played by Lucy Liu) takes offense to what someone says so she busts out the samurai sword for a little revenge. The blood squirting out his neck is the best part, Tarantino pays tribute to old Kung-fu, Japanese, and Wuxia films like Shogun Assasin and Lady Snowblood. Classic.

Ichi the Killer - Ichi OWNS

This scene is from the Takashi Miike classic Ichi the Killer, where a retractable blade in Ichi's shoe slices a man completely in half, both sides fall apart in comedic action. Miike OWNS.
